
Mahasandhi, Dzogchen, or the Great-Totality/Great-Perfection, in itself means the
ultimate state of the mind, the true condition of the being and reality. In this respect the word
Mahasandhi does not refer to some type of spiritual teachings or
practices, but refers directly to the ultimate state of reality.
Even though Dzogchen took form within the Buddhist traditions of India, most likely somewhere between the 5th and 7th centuries CE, the spiritual tradition of Dzogchen by itself is beyond religious form and doctrine, it points directly at the essence of mind and reality, it is formless and strongly experiential. From this point of view we can even say that it is the heart-essence of all religions.
The essence of Dzogchen is based upon the recognition of the primordial wisdom of the ultimate mind, also called primordial awareness - or Vidya. This ultimate space, the great non-duality of the ultimate space that is fully aware, lucid and awakened is the true nature of every being; it is the fundamental basis of reality itself.
So as a spiritual view, Mahasandhi refers directly to the primordial state of Being; on the other hand, as a complete spiritual tradition that stands on its own, is offers a complete set of teachings, explanations, practices, meditations, i.e. a spiritual path, and in this aspect we can refer to it as Atiyana, the Primordial Path to reach our primordial ultimate nature..
